The Basajaun demo building is being built in Bordeaux (France) in cooperation with the Departement de Gironde. The demonstration is devoted to products manufacturing regarding scalability and replicability in a system prototype within an operational environment.
About the main structure of the Basajaun demo-building
The main structure of the Basajaun southern demo building is a glulam post and beam system developed by Moelven Töreboda AB in Sweden. The system, called ”Wood 8”, is developed to be a slender, material efficient building system for high rise timber buildings. It has standardized components but offers great freedom to architects in terms of span, width and layout.
The system targets the traditional post and beam market but replaces steel and concrete with glulam. The name “Wood 8” is a permanent reminder that the system is wood based and offers 8m span width.
Technical description: Horizontal stabilization is achieved using trusses of glulam or elevator and staircase shaft in concrete. In some cases, steel trusses are used. The floor elements are made of glulam and lvl and are specifically designed to have superior dynamic properties that improve the experience of comfort as well as step sound insulation.
Contributions to the Basajaun project
Moelven contributes to the basajaun project with statistical engineering competences and production capacity for the glulam and floor elements. The team has the opportunity to further develop techniques for parametric design including the development of a new steel connector that saves cost and CO2.
They have also, for the first time, introduced the use of wood fiber insulation instead of mineral wool in their floor elements. This has a significant impact on lowering the CO2 footprint. The light floor elements are probably the most CO2 efficient on the market for multi-story buildings.
The complete assembly of unique products in the Basajaun building forms a combination of materials and innovations never seen before. It is a true light weight and non-massive concept with very efficient use of all materials and components.
The Basajaun demo building is currently under construction and will soon be completed.
About Moelven Töreboda AS
Moelven Töreboda AB is a leading Swedish glulam producer. In close cooperation with our sister company in Norway Moelven Limtre AS, the company designs, produces and erects large wooden structures in Sweden and Norway. Moelven has an inhouse engineering department that performs statical engineering for both multistorey buildings as well as timber bridges and traditional glulam frames for all sorts of buildings. Moelven drives innovation for modern timber buildings and strives to take existing building systems to the next level. A focus is on envelope walls and roof design for optimal insulation, to reduce material needs and the climate impact to a minimum.
In Basajaun, Moelven is leading WP5 ‘Building systems and products’.
