Basajaun is a major European innovation action about sustainable building with wood. The main objective is to demonstrate how wood construction chains can be optimized to foster both rural development and urban transformation whilst being connected with sustainable forest management in Europe.

The project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement no. 862942 from 2019-2023.

Context and objectives

Sustainable wood construction

Wood is a circular material par excellence: It stores CO₂ in solid products for decades and can be recycled both biologically and technically. By using more wood, buildings can reduce emissions and become carbon sinks..

Digitalization and innovation

The digital transformation is leading to disruptive changes also in forestry and wood industries. Digital twins of forests and smart buildings with wood are becoming a reality.

Rural development

Forestry and wood industries provide employment and income in Europe’s rural regions, which represent around 80% of the EU territory. Modernising cities through building with wood is an opportunity for more growth in disadvantaged regions.

The consortium comprises 29 partners from 12 countries including 8 leading research and technology organizations, 3 universities, 15 companies and 4 other public and sectoral organizations. The project is coordinated by the Tecnalia Research and Innovation Foundation in Spain.
